FAO Boss Status In A Limbo After Somalia Declares Him Persona Non Grata
Talks between Somalia government and the UN are underway to resolve a diplomatic row that emerged following orders by Mogadishu to declare FAO Somalia Country director persona non grata. A source from within UNSOM confirmed to Radio Dalsan that consultations were are underway regarding status of Richard Trenchard. Somalia on Thursday is reported to have asked UN for the removal of Trenchard accusing him of "gross misconduct" and of "abusing proviledge of his residence" according to a government official. Local media has quoter . The Minister of Planning, Investment and Economic Development, Gamal Hassan saying that among the reasons for expulsion of FAO boss are "FAO relocation from Nairobi, his conduct, lack of proper plan and strategy”.Gamal told a Somali news website. FAO Somalia a UN agency dealing with alleviating hunger has been operating from Nairobi. Pressure has been on by Somalia to have it relocate its operations to Mogadishu. A UN source however told Radio Dalsan that the issue had been blown out of proportion and may be a witchhunt between a certain ministry on the FAO boss. The source says there are some ministers who are not in good terms with Trenchard. " It is not the first time we have seen this happen to Amadou Kamara of UNSOS" the source said.
