Somalia is facing prolonged drought, Priti Patel says
UK’s International Development Secretary Priti Patel said “Almost half of Somalia’s population are living in desperate conditions, without enough food to eat. Over a quarter of a million children will suffer life-threatening malnutrition this year. “The UK is a world leader on humanitarian aid and we are leading the response to this crisis by increasing emergency assistance and calling on the international community to urgently step up their support before it is too late. “At the London Somalia Conference the UK is convening global leaders, the UN and key players from Somali government and business to urgently respond to this desperate situation. “Securing a stable future for Somalia and its people through much-needed food, water and medicine to prevent a famine, alongside security, political and economic progress, will support long term peace and prosperity.” The London Somalia Conference is hosted by the United Kingdom and convenes international partners to accelerate progress on security sector reform, build on the international response to the ongoing drought and humanitarian crisis and agree the new international partnership needed to keep Somalia on course for increased peace and prosperity.
